Mysteries of Shipwreck Revealed
The mysteries of a shipwreck found in Poole Harbour will be revealed at Poole Museum on Saturday 1 November.
Leading maritime archaeologists from Bournemouth University will talk about their latest findings following the discovery of the 17th century warship whose identity is still unknown.
The talk about the ‘Swash Channel Wreck’ found in 2004 forms part of a series of free talks organised by Borough of Poole and Poole Museum Society.
Maritime archaeologists Dave Parham and Paola Palma will discuss the excavation project including the discovery of a number of unique carvings, which includes a perfectly preserved merman carving.
Items from the ship, which has been designated a nationally important wreck by English Heritage, will eventually go on display in Poole Museum.
Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: “We are very pleased to be working alongside Poole Museum Society on these talks and hope there will be many more in the future. The subjects are fascinating and by holding them at weekends we hope to attract many more visitors to the Museum.”
Brian Ellis, Chairman of Poole Museum Society, said: “We are delighted to be working with Poole Museum to provide these events which reflect some of the present and future highlights of Poole Museum’s collections.”
The talk will begin at 2pm and visitors are asked to reserve a place in advance.
A second talk by Poole Pottery master potter Alan White will be held on Saturday 6 December.
For more information about the events or to reserve a place contact Poole Museum on 01202 262600.

Is your car dressed for winter?
-Breeze Volkswagen offer winter peace of mind to drivers-
With the clocks about to go back and the winter months looming ahead, Tower Park-based motor dealership Breeze Volkswagen is offering motorists advice to ensure engines hum and vehicle performance is high when temperatures drop. To assist motorists to shift into gear for winter driving, Breeze Volkswagen is providing a comprehensive winter health check service to ensure that a vehicle is functioning correctly.
Winter conditions place greater demands on a car and any minor problems could become more obvious and cause difficulties as the weather gets colder. In cold conditions it takes extra power to start an engine and the increased use of heaters and demisters could affect the car battery. It is important that people forward plan now to ensure that winter breakdowns are a rare occurrence.
The Breeze Volkswagen winter health check involves an extensive inspection of 24 primary vehicle functions including anti-freeze efficiency, tyres, lights, oil, brakes and exhaust. Any potential problems with the vehicle will be highlighted in a report and presented to the customer with recommendations.
John Corderoy, managing director at Breeze Volkswagen, says: “Forward planning and preventative maintenance will help to maximise the reliability of a vehicle. Our professional staff are fully trained in all aspects of servicing and maintenance to ensure a car continues to provide mile after mile of trouble free driving. Aside from scheduling a professional health check, motorists should spend a few minutes checking key items on the car such as tyres for condition and correct pressure, oil and water levels and that the wiper blades and lights are delivering optimum visibility.”
The winter health check costs £19.99 and for further information please contact Breeze Volkswagen on 01202 713000.

“In Search of a Midnight Kiss”
In Search of a Midnight Kiss is a rollicking comic ride and tender journey though love, sex, and modern romance in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve. Wilson (Scoot McNairy), a twenty-nine-year old guy who has just had the worst year of his life, is new to Los Angeles, has no date, no concrete plans and every intention of locking the doors and forgetting the last year ever happened. That is until his best friend, Jacob (Brian McGuire), browbeats him into posting a personal ad on Craig’s List. When Vivian (Sara Simmonds), a strong-willed woman hell bent on being with the right guy at the stroke of midnight responds, a chaotic, sometimes hilarious, sometimes touching journey through the black and white streets of L.A. begins. In the waning hours of the year, emotional vulnerability and bitterly honest humor seem to be waiting around every corner

Living in the shadows--cut off from a life he knew and the woman he loves, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler)--Banner struggles to avoid the obsessive pursuit of his nemesis, General Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), and the military machinery that seeks to capture him and brutally exploit his power.
As all three grapple with the secrets that led to The Hulk’s creation, they are confronted with a monstrous new adversary known as The Abomination (Tim Roth), whose destructive strength exceeds even The Hulk’s own. And on June 13, 2008, one scientist must make an agonizing final choice: accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or find heroism in the creature he holds inside--’The Incredible Hulk.’

Event: Saturday 16th August 2008
Hear ye! Hear ye! Have fun this Saturday and support a local charity!
The longest serving town crier in England will be one of a number of special guests at Hospital Radio Bedside’s (HRB) annual Summer Fayre on Saturday 16 August from 10.30am to 4.30pm at Pelhams Park, Kinson, Bournemouth.
David Squires, the celebrated Town Crier of Poole who has held his office for over fifty years will be attending the event, which will also include a fun dog show, grand prize draw, inflatable slide, local produce stalls and even a classic cars display.
Mr Squires will be joined by another famous voice, HRB President and announcer of the National Lottery balls, Alan Dedicoat, who will be formally opening the fayre at 11am.
And if two local heroes weren’t quite enough, HRB have also drafted in neighbourhood vet Haydn O’Neil from the Aniwell Veterinary Clinic on Wimborne Road, Kinson to help judge the dog show. He’s going to be looking out for waggy tails, cool tricks and dogs that bear more than a passing resemblance to their owners! Anyone can enter their pet pooch, and the fee to take part is just £1 per class.
In addition to all of the above there will be belly dancing and Thai Chi displays, as well as a record sale.
All proceeds will go towards Hospital Radio Bedside, which is run entirely by volunteers from a small studio in the grounds of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. The charity provides specially tailored radio programmes 24 hours a day, seven days a week for patients in five hospitals around Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Wimborne. The station has been running for over thirty five years, and the annual Summer Fayre is its biggest fundraising event.
For further information about volunteering at Hospital Radio Bedside or the Summer Fayre, please contact HRB either by phone on 01202 303887, or by fax on 01202 704525.

Fun For All In Poole
Borough of Poole is hosting a number of fun-packed days for all the family this August.
The Fundays, which are sponsored by The Big Lottery, offer the chance for local communities to take part in sports, play and environmental activities as well as arts and crafts free of charge.
DJ workshops and kite making are just some of the urban-themed activities that will take place during the National Play Day at Baiter Park on Wednesday 6 August. Other attractions include BMX riding, environmental activities, face painting and arts and crafts.
Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: “The Fundays we have previously held have been hugely successful and they provide a great day out for all ages. This is a wonderful example of how valuable initiatives are being delivered to the local community across the Borough.
This demonstrates once again our commitment to building stronger and lasting communities.”
Play Rangers, a new project funded by The Big Lottery, will also be launched at the event by Barnardos. During the summer the Play Rangers will be running a variety of activities such as den-building and water play at parks and open spaces across the borough, and will be running sessions after school from September.
Cllr Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Supporting Children and Young People, Borough of Poole, said: “The new Play Rangers service is an exciting development which will provide children with more play opportunities and supports the Bournemouth and Poole Play Strategy. We hope that this new initiative will prove to be a popular service with children and young people and they enjoy the events held throughout the year."
Similar Funday activities will take place at Branksome Rec on Wednesday 20 August.
Fundays are open to everyone with a range of activities to suit all ages from toddlers to young people and run between 11am and 3pm.
For more information about the events, please contact Virginia Bailey, Recreation Development Officer, on 01202 261304.

New Exhibition at Poole Museum
Food and drink is often consumed away from the dining table - the new exhibition at Poole Museum chronicles the ways plastic items have been used in the food industry.
‘Eat in or Take Out? Plastics for Portability’ exhibits a wide range of plastic items showing the different ways the material has been used for transporting food and drink, and how their design and character have changed with our eating habits and greater awareness of the environment.
When it comes to snacking and eating on the move, plastic has often been the material of choice for designers and manufacturers. It is cheap to make, light to carry, durable and insulating, making it the ideal choice for food and drink containers.
At a time when there are strong concerns about the effects of the manufacture and disposal of plastics on the environment, this exhibition is a timely survey of design in plastic over six decades.
To showcase the variety of forms modern and historic plastic containers take the exhibit is split into 14 sections including picnic past and present, squeeze me and TV times.
The colourful displays include familiar packaging such as burger boxes as well as historical items such as in-flight airline catering equipment from the British Overseas Airways Corporation.
Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: “The Council is committed to reducing Poole’s carbon footprint. This exhibition gives us the opportunity to learn from the lessons of the past and to think about how we can avoid creating and using plastics in an unsustainable way in the future.“
Michael Spender, Museum Manager, Borough of Poole, said: “The exhibition was created by the Museum of Design in Plastics at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth and we are very pleased to be able to provide this showcase for part of its rich collection.”
The free exhibition opened on July 21 2008 and runs until 15 March 2009.
Please contact Poole Museum on 01202 262600 or email museum@poole.gov.uk or visit www.boroughofpoole.com/museums for more information.
