From about the age of 20, I started to be aware of weight gain and explored different ways to overcome the extra pounds I put on. Later, following the birth of my first child, I gained approximately three stone. I managed to lose about two stone naturally after the birth, however I retained about a stone to a stone and a half. I tried several diets and eating plans but the weight did not shift very quickly and, also, any weight that I did lose, I put back on fairly rapidly. After the birth of my second child, my weight gain was more or less the same as with the first, but after managing to lose a good deal of it, I was again left around a stone and half overweight.
The feeling of being overweight and uncomfortable in my clothes - and even in my own skin - was a daily issue. I disliked the way I looked when dressed and, even more so, unclothed. I would regularly become upset over this issue and lost confidence in myself. I found it very hard to accept compliments and even if a day started off well, I would always end up at some point feeing low about the way I looked. I never considered myself to be an over-eater and I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about which foods to eat and which to avoid, having tried so many different types of eating plans.
When I was introduced to the concept of Exante’s meal replacement system I was very keen to try it, although I was concerned that I would struggle to be without ‘normal’ food for a whole month. However, by the time I started the plan, I was very ready for it and had spent quite some time mentally preparing myself for the journey I was about to take.
The first few days were very difficult for me. Having a partner and two children to prepare meals for, temptation was a daily occurrence and, yes, I certainly was hungry. I found it easiest to busy myself at meal times for the first few days so I literally prepared the food for the family and then, whilst they ate, I tidied away ensuring any leftover food was either stored or thrown away. It was also essential for me to feel as though I was eating, so I made sure I waited for a quiet time, prepared my soups and sat down at the table and enjoyed my meal! After the initial few days the hunger subsided and I actually felt very good. The water intake was having a very positive effect on my skin and I enjoyed my shakes for breakfast and my soups for lunch and dinner. I found it far more a journey for the mind, and it was definitely a case of realising that I did not need the snack or the extra helping of food I would have had previously, and that my body was receiving all it needed - and I felt good! I had lots of energy and my mood was far better than usual. I can suffer quite a bit with mood swings and feeling uptight, but throughout the entire month I felt really well. I had energy to exercise and enjoyed incorporating that into my weekly routine.
There were a few low points throughout the month when I felt that perhaps my weight loss was not as rapid as I thought it should be, but this was purely due to the fact that I was weighing myself constantly at home and becoming too focussed on what the scales were reading, which was completely unnecessary and, actually, once I stopped doing that I became far more relaxed.
The main source of encouragement and support throughout the month came from my Exante consultant, and attending my weekly weigh-ins and counselling sessions was essential to the success of my journey. The weigh-in is obviously a must and when you see the weight that has come off it really spurs you on, but the opportunity to just chat about how the week has been and any ups and downs was really good. I was given lots of helpful advice and my focus was really refreshed after every meeting. Having a consultant that has been through the process was great, as I knew she was talking from experience and really could empathise with my low and high points.
After a month on the plan I lost a total of 1 stone and 1 pound, which I am so pleased about. I have dropped a dress size most definitely and, generally, my shape has improved all over. The weight loss has been fairly even over my whole body. I feel much better than before and have lots more confidence in myself.
Going back to eating was fine, I have been careful with my carbohydrate intake and I make sure I eat plenty of salad, vegetables and protein. I have also tried to keep up the water intake, as I find this very beneficial. One of the things I learnt was that, actually, I did eat quite a bit more than is necessary and I now feel far more focussed on what to eat and I feel capable of managing my weight positively.
I have a few important social events this summer and, whilst I intend to maintain my weight now, I also have the peace of mind of knowing that I could use Exante in the future for shorter periods of time should I want to lose a few pounds in a concentrated period and it would always be effective.
The entire journey has been a very positive experience for me and I would recommend Exante to anyone who has weight they want to lose. The eating plan is manageable, the support from Exante is superb and the weight loss is fantastic!
You lose weight quickly because your body is in energy deficit; you are using more calories than you are eating, so your body turns to its ‘store cupboards’ for energy. The first store is glycogen, a type of sugar. Once this is used up (after about 3 days) your body turns to its fat stores for energy and you will go into a mild form of ketosis (fat burning mode). This naturally suppresses hunger, so you will feel satisfied and not need any other food. You remain well because your body is having all the vitamins and minerals it needs from the Exante meal replacements, and you are getting all of your energy from your fat stores.
