How fast we age depends a lot on genetics and sun exposure.

It’s so easy to dismiss celebrities who have cosmetic procedures as vain and self obsessed, especially when we are in our 20’s!

The face that looks back at us from the mirror is smooth, fresh and wrinkle free, and will always be so. Well that’s what we think! Right?

Obviously, our skin ages as we do but the process will speed up if we smoke, as this starves our skin of oxygen, drink to much alcohol, eat a diet low in nutrients and, of course, sun exposure, especially without sunscreen.

But what if you are no longer in your 20’s and the damage has already been done?

Today, let’s talk about facial muscle relaxing injections.

In the name of research, I made an appointment with Dr. Desmond McCann (or Dr. Des, as we affectionally like to call him).

Never let it be said I won’t go to the wire for you. Or, in this case, the NEEDLE!

I have, for many years, used needles in my work so am definitely not needle shy, but it’s a different matter when someone is putting them in me.

After thorough consultation when you will be asked various medical questions, Dr. Des will explain the procedure to you. You can have it there and then or make a future appointment.

I lay comfortably on the couch (apart from some tight subconscious buttock clenching). I was to frown, this is to show exactly where to inject. “Frown Julie, ok now relax your face, I said, relax”. I WAS relaxing - gosh, my wrinkles must be worse than I thought!

Before I knew it, a tissue was pressed to my forehead and it was over (bearing no resemblance to the searing pain of what felt like a branding iron going into my upper arm administered by the school nurse all those years ago). No, barely a scratch.

I must be honest, I was worried I might end up having to tell people exactly what emotion I was feeling (have you seen some celebs faces these days?) but I needn’t have as, over the next week, the injections slowly began to kick in and although I felt my brow was furrowing, when I checked in the mirror there was just a flicker.

Having said that, thankfully, I didn’t resemble a shop window dummy or feel like my dentist had overdone the Novocain! On the contrary, I felt just the same, but around my eyes I now had a few gentle laugh lines - not great big crows feet anymore.

The effects on average last about three months, but it can and does last longer for some, we are all individuals. A client of mine who had muscle relaxing injections found that the time between appointments grew longer.
